Have you ever wanted to escape to a place with fairytale villages and castles? If so, southern France may be the place for you. Medieval villages are perched on hilltops throughout the French Alps, and they transport you to another time and place.
Many of these medieval villages were built between the 10th and 15th centuries, and it’s somewhat difficult to grasp all the history that must have taken place. Most of the villages have a labyrinth of narrow streets and stairs the wind throughout the village. Some villages still have the original stone wall around them that were built for protection. And some still allow people to walk around the ramparts, which is quite an adventure!
No two villages are alike, but they do have some things in common. Many still have castles at the topmost point of the village, and some of these castles have museums or are open to visit. Most still have the original church that was erected during the Middle Ages. The villages all have quaint shops and eateries as well as beautiful blooming plants throughout.
If you are taking a trip to southern France, I highly recommend visiting at least one of these magical villages. Whether you want one to see one of these villages that overlooks the Mediterranean, one tucked back further into the Alps, one where you can dare to walk along the ramparts, or something else, I would be happy to find the village you are looking for.
