When planning trips, many people ask me what the difference is between first- and second-class seats on a train. While it can vary slightly depending on the region, the first obvious answer is that first class tickets cost more. First class compartments have a bit more leg room and more room for luggage storage. They are generally less crowded and quieter. Some have complimentary drinks and snacks provided and more outlets for charging.
Are first class seats worth the extra cost? That’s obviously up to the individual to decide based on budget and preferences and where you are traveling. If you are taking a longer journey and want a little more space and quiet, it may be worth the extra cost.
Another nice perk for families is that some trains even have specific areas for young children. I recently took two different trains that had a small play space for children. It’s a great way for kids to burn off energy in a safe place while passing the time (without disrupting other passengers!).
I personally enjoy riding the rails in Europe. I love seeing the different landscapes roll by and not having to worry about driving and directions. If you have any questions about traveling around Europe, I am here to help!
